Returning to Argentina was the obvious choice for this year’s winter break. This time I was determined to get to the southern most tip of the country – Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego. By booking a flight with Aereolinas Argentinas a few weeks before I left…I was able to fulfill my ambition. There is actually a ferry to Antarctica…well more like mini cruises that can take from ten days to eighteen days depending on the route.
I landed in Buenos Aires on Wednesday 28 December 2025 after a comfortable KLM flight from Amsterdam. The preceding voyage from Stoke to Birmingham by rail, then by air to Schiphol took no time in comparison to the fourteen hours on the long-haul flight. A couple of films helped to pass the start of the journey… The Penguin Lessons – about an English teacher in a private boys school in Argentina at the time of the 1976 coup…was great. The plot revolves around a rescued penguin and its refusal to its leave saviour once it had recovered. Highly recommend it. The other was a science fiction film… in a post apocalyptic dystopian world. Entertaining…but I can’t even recall the title. Food on board was really good with a small but interesting range of options. I skipped the wine list…sparkling water was just what I needed. Having previously mastered the controls for reclining seat…I was also able to get a fair bit of sleep.
At this moment in time…I am unable to devote the attention I would like to a full account of my wonderful adventure in Argentina. Experiencing an unexpected strong, tearfully emotion reaction when the KLM flight left the ground…cannot be ignored. The urge to return is powerful…so…all being well… you can expect a similar post around the same time next year.
Later this year I will turn 85 and have pledged to reduce some of my commitments. Not to sit back and relax, but rather to engage more fully with archiving and telling my life story. I think you will agree…my website has a key role to play.
For now, I will allow the pictures I took to tell the story of this year’s adventures.
Take care,
Maurice
